Mic is always on..

i can hear myself breathing through my speakers, when the mic hits something a rly loud hitting noise comes through the speakers. any way to stop this mic being 'always on'?

In the control panel you should see an icon that says Sounds and Audio Devices, which lets you control the volume of the main sound, mic, headphones, wave, etc..

when i do that, my mic doesnt work at all

That is the mic playback. When you use the mic to speak in a program that isn't playback that is recording. And It will work fine as long as mic is selected in the recordings properties. But this is the reason for your pour sound quality in your other post.
