Hard Drive and DVD-RW On Same IDE Cable?

Currently, I have 2 hard drives on my primary IDE channel and a DVD-RW on my secondary IDE channel.

In my quest for more disk space, I want to add a third hard drive (I do not want to buy a bigger hd at this time to replace the smaller ones that I have on my primary). Is it possible to add the third hard drive on the same IDE cable with my DVD-RW?

I know you're not supposed to mix them up, but will it work?

And if this is possible, which is to be the master and which the slave?

it will probably work, but not well.

if you really need the space, spring for either an ATA controller or a SATA controller.

for storage it should be fine but i would never do it with a boot drive as it limits it's bandwidth and you can get annoying lag if you put a CD/DVD in.
