Any ideas on why I can't record any sound?

So I want to set up PC->phone calls (this is important since I have no regular phone), and the earphones of my headset work, but not the microphone. I have the red plug in the correct mic port. In the sound recorder dialogue, the wave line doesn't move when I press record.

I'm using the right (the only accepted) device in audio properties. It's a pretty old mic though, maybe it just shorted out.

well try a new mic that c\should narrrow the problem down u can get cheap mics like 5 or 10 bucks at ur local wal mart

Yeah that's the obvious solution, but since the earphones work I thought it might be a software problem.

doubtful try to use the mic in some other programs if u have winxp try to configure the voice recognition thing its under control panel speech if that works then we know ur mic works and we can move from there but the first step is to see if the mic works at all
