Finding out RAM type

Is there a way to find out what kind of RAM is in my computer (SDRAM, DDRAM, etc) without pulling the case open? I went to My Computer -> Properties and it just says I have 512MB it doesnt say what kind

Download CPU-Z here (download link on top left corner). Run it, and then go to the memory page. Should give you type of RAM, clock speed and latencies.

The clock speed reported there is the *actual* clock of the memory. If it's DDR, multiply by two to get the *effective* clock (which is what retailers advertise).

And to make it easier if you want to upgrade, here's a few common DDR1 speeds:

PC2700 = DDR333 (real clock - 166MHz, effective clock - 333MHz)
PC3200 = DDR400 (real clock - 200MHz, effective clock - 400MHz)
PC4000 = DDR500 (real clock - 250MHz, effective clock - 500MHz)
