I agree with nitestick, 7600GT is better. The X850XT is also a good card...better then the 7600GT and cheaper. But I heard it doesn't support shader something. Is this a big con?

Can't go wrong with the 7600gt, great card and supports all shader features. Realy excellent performance for it's price, too.

7600gt is the better of the 2 cards. the x850xt bigpal mentioned is also good, if it turns out to be cheaper than the 7600gt. i'm not familiar with any compatibility issues with the x850xt.

out of the processors you mentioned the opteron 165 is the best of the lot.. although, if you do pick an opteron processor, you'll have to use socket 939 instead of AM2 and DDR ram instead of DDR2...

hmm yes. Seems as though 7600gt is the better card. Thanks for clearing that up for me...

Now the question is.. is an opty/939 mobo/ddr ram a better route than say am2 3800, am2 mobo and ddr2 ram?

Depends what Opteron, but I can say now that the AM2 will be more 'future proof.'

a similarly priced opty of the 3800.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Dual Core Processor - Retail
(am2 mobo, ddr2 ram, etc) system

vs.

AMD Opteron 146 Venus 2.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail
(oc'ing 939 mobo, oc'ing ram, etc) system
