my comp is hanging at startup,help please :(

hey folks, about 2 days ago my system was fine then i downloaded some win updates and a few programs, and it started not to respond at startup...you'd just see the background and the computer not showing activity at all...just hanging.
what can i do?
oh an btw i run on win 2000
