A mandatory update of the Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Beta is being sent out to testers via auto-update.

Version 8.1.0068 is identical to 0066 so expect the same features and the same bugs. Is this a move to shake off all unauthorized users?

NOTE: In order to auto-update using Vista, make sure Messenger is running admin mode by right-clicking the msnmsgr.exe file and select 'Run as administrator'. There's also still a conflict between Messenger and Shockwave on Vista which makes the software crash.

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft would be readying a new build of Windows Vista. The build, currently planned to be number 5728, is apparently going to be the last build that will be offered to testers, leaving two months to the company to fix new bugs discovered during that final phase of testing before the OS hits RTM in late october or november.

The time we ship ... is very soon,", said Jim Allchin. He also introduced a new website to promote the future operating system, See Windows Vista.

Just minutes ago, Microsoft released yet another refresh of Windows Vista to it's beta testers via Microsoft Connect.

Buid 5728 is available in both X86, which is about 2,622MB (2.6GB) and X64 which is just over 3,620MB (3.2GB). The download is available in English, German and Japanese.

Also available, is build 5728 of Windows Longhorn Server which is also available in both X86 and X64.

This is a pre RTM build, and is not the final build which will be released to testers.
