P4 Heat

i helped a friend build a p4 a month or two ago, but its been running really hot on the cpu. I think he gets 60+ temps, which is insane. We tried putting new grease on rather than a thermal pad, but it didn't really help. Why is it so hot?? Does he just need a new heatsink/fan?

Yeah, you might want to invest in an aftermarket heatsink/fan to bring those temps down... 60 is pretty hot, also as mentioned above, make sure you didnt put too much thermal paste on because although its thermally conductive, too much will keep heat from being transferred well from the cpu to heatsink.

maybe its just a lack of fans or they are positioned badly

Done use cheap thermal grease, get some Arctice Silver V. That stuff works extreamly well. Also look into getting a heatsink with a copper embeded plate, such as the aplha company sells.

Yes the Alpha Company is my choice for most of my CPU Cooling on the desktops I build. They have some very nice systems. While I use the paste they include I am sure that by adding a better paste it could only help.
