windows 2k headaches

ok so i just got a laptop second hand from my aunt its a pIII, and runs windows 2k. the hard drive was dead so i replaced it and reinstalled windows, now im trying to update it to sp4 but it keeps telling me that my kernel isnt a windows file! first thing is that even possible? second how do i fix it? any help and or suggestions are appreciated.

have you tried a clean install of the os then updating the service pack.

i have treid a repair install, but not a full. i dont think that would make much of a difference. considering i just installed anyway.
i know that both of the discs are good, i have used the 2k disc and the sp4 upgrade disc in the past and this is the first time i have had any trouble

a clean install most likley will fix it. it could be having conflicts with other files or firewalls ect. if i where you i would do the clean install.
