why so many PCIe choices

I was looking over some motherboards and found that some have multiple PCIe slots:

1 x PCI Express x16 slot
1 x PCI Express x4 slot
2 x PCI Express x1
3 x PCI 2.2

i can understand the PCI 2.2 and the x16, they are for the video, ethernet and modems cards, but what is the x4 and x1 for.

The X1 are X4 slots are the future PCI slots. Newer cards will begin to use them. Many don't use them since the high bandwidth isn't needed yet and most people still have PCI. So the Express versions wouldn't appeal to the market and they would loose $$$.

i've already seen a t.v. tuner for the x1 slot.. though i have seen 0 for the x4 as of now
