Recovering Data from DVD-RW

I was wondering how possible is it to recover data from DVD-RW discs?

A friend has asked for a copy of something I had a looong time ago, and the only place I can remember storing it was on a DVD-RW backup disc which unfortunately has been erased and used again.

Is there anyway to get old data off it, or is it well and truly goooone?

from a rewritable dvd that has been completely erased it is gone forever. the recording process for a DVD is very different from that of a hdd and will make it impossible to recover.
