Instuctions for installing Foxmarks to run on local network:
NOTE: WebDAV Server in installed by default when installing IIS
(Internet Information Services) on Windows XP Pro. The
client is enabled by default. This differs on different
platforms including other versions of Windows.
1) Install the WebDAV server service on the computer to host
the bookmark file.
a) Add/Remove Programs | Windows Components (left side)
b) Install 'Internet Information Services (IIS)'
c) Click 'Details' and make sure the "World Wide Web Service'
is selected
NOTE: You will be prompted for you Windows XP installation
disc.
2) After installation is finished, create the share folder that
will contain the bookmarks file to shared. For the purposes
of this guide, assume the host computer on which you just
installed IIS, is named FILESERVER. Also assume that the
shared file location (ie. your WebDAV share) will be
C:\webdav
a) Create a folder in C:\ named 'webdav'
b) Right-click the folder and select 'Properties'
c) Select the 'Web Sharing' tab at the top
d) Select 'Share this folder' - a new window appears
e) Select the following:
Access permissions:
- Read
- Write
- Directory browsing
Application permissions:
- None
f) Create a 'firefox' subfolder in C:\webdav
(ie. C:\webdav\firefox). This will be where
your bookmarks file will be located.
NOTE: Your newly created share can be accessed as:
http://fileserver/webdav
OPTIONAL (if Foxmarks has problems accessing the WebDAV share):
g) Run iis.msc (C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc)
h) Navigate to \FILESERVER\Web Sites\Default Web Site\WebDAV
Right-click and choose Properties
i) Select the 'Directory Security' tab and enable anonymous
access
NOTE: Be sure toremove username and password in
Foxmark options
2) Start the WebDAV client on the client machines - ensure the
WebClient service is set to automatic:
a) Type 'services.msc' in Start | Run
b) Scroll down to WebClient and double-click it
c) Set 'Startup Type' to automatic
3) Ensure that the clients can properly authenticate to the
WebDAV server:
a) On the fileserver, either create a dummy file or copy
and rename a file to test.html and place in
http://fileserver/webdav/firefox (which is
C:\webdav\firefox)
b) On the client, type 'http://fileserver/webdav/firefox/test.html'
to open the dummy file in your webbrowser. You should
be prompted for a username and password. Enter the
appropriate username/password and be sure to click the
'Remember this Password'
c) Repeat Step 3b, you should no longer receive the username/
password prompt
4) (Optional) Ensure the Firefox bookmark location is set to default:
NOTE: This is only necessary if you have manually changed
the default location of the bookmarks file
a) type "about:config" in the address bar in Firefox
b) type "browser.bookmarks.file" and double click the entry
c) clear any possible values and hit 'OK'
d) right-click the entry and select 'Reset' - this will delete
the entry
5) Install Foxmarks by double-clicking the file:
foxmarks_bookmark_synchronizer-0.72-fx.xpi
Note: You may have to select to open with Firefox
which is typically located at
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
3) Tools | Extensions | Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer
a) Enter the Username/Password that worked successfully in
step #3
b) Click 'Options' button at bottom
c) Select the 'Other' tab at the top
d) Change the Advanced Server Settings:
- HTTP radio button
- Server: fileserver/webdav
- Path: /firefox/
e) Maintenance: 'Download Now' to update you machine with
the shared bookmarks file
'Upload Now' ONLY if putting the bookmarks file to be
shared onto the server
