Ever since I installed Norton I've been getting the 'end now' dialog box that says ccapp.exe is not responding. I can click end now or just wait for it to end, either way the computer takes eons to finally shut down. I click start/shutdown multiple times but it just hangs for a while before it finally decides to power off.

I've done a ton of searches and it seems this problem extends back into '03 and ccapp is required for auto-protect in Norton. What I'm asking is that is there any way to remove the 'end now' box alltogether? As in, the computer just closes all programs and shuts down. I remember coming across a post in some forum where a guy said he got rid of the ccapp problem by editing the registry to do this, and unfortunately I can no longer find that post. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:confused:
 
It's not spyware. At least, I'm 99% sure. I've read countless forum posts from all the way back in '03 to try and find out how to fix this. Tons of people have the same problem. Nothing worked, thus I'm asking how to command my computer to automatically end it when I shut down my computer.

Just to be safe though... I followed your link and downloaded HijackThis (had heard of it before). Here's my log. Anything I should get rid of?

I know you said this started happening right after you installed norton but I would uninstall and reinstall Norton see what happens.
 
For the time being I did find this workaround

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue on Windows XP Professional-based computers that are not a member of a domain and on Windows XP Home-based computers, use the Fast User Switching feature. When this feature is enabled, follow these steps:1. Click Start, and then click Log Off.
2. Click Switch User.
3. Click Turn off computername.
4. Click Turn Off or click Restart.
5. At the prompt that warns that other people are logged on to this computer, click Yes

Try using the Norton Removal Tool instead of Uninstalling it via Add / Remove Programs... http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 . Run the tool in Safe Mode (with Networking).

...Then reinstall it in Safe Mode. After you've installed it, make sure you update it via liveupdate.

If ccapp.exe still freezes at shutdown, then you can force the system to automatically end non responsive processes and applications which freeze at shutdown, by changing the string value AutoEndTasks in the registry, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop . You'll also want to change the value WaitToKillAppTimeout to speed up the kill process.

Description:
ccapp.exe is a process belonging to Norton AntiVirus. It is responsible for the auto-protect and email checking facilities, both of which will not function correctly if this service is stopped. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Norton is more trouble than its worth!

Sorry just had to say that as 2005 internet security screwed my old pc and all i see is negative comments about it!

Oddly enough... the problem hasn't happened the last few times I've shut down my computer. If it continues I'll try the reinstall, then if I have to edit the registry. Again, thanks for all the advice!
