HDD randomly shutting down?

This hasn't happened in a while, but it just happened about 10 minutes ago.

Randomly, rarely and spontaneously my HDD will shut off.

I know it is shutting off, because I can hear it powering down, and when I restart, I hear it powering up when my motherboard scans for masters+slaves.

What could be causing this?

power saving settings could be causing your HDD to shutdown after x time inactive, I think you can set this in the power options in the control panel.

Same thing happens on my old pc where i have two hard disks. It's just saving power when its not in use and also increasing the lifespan of the disk by shutting it down.

But even if I'm using the hard drive? hm
