well its in his budget to get 1 gig not 2 (i agree with you on throwing out the 2x512 stuff, happened to me lol, but someone gets free ram and isnt' making that person happy all that matters?) but always get a pineapple to eat when you are building your comp

Thanks for all the great input. What kind of a pc could I build for around $500-$550. Could a setup around that price range still be relatively fast and play the games I mentioned in my first post pretty well.

well it is stupid compared to getting 2 gigs.

i dont see how you planon playing games with one gig. then when you go to upgrade your goingto have to buy ALL new stuff

I have only 1 GB of RAM, and I can play games just fine. I'm not saying he won't notice the very slight difference in performance, but you make it sound like he has no hope of playing ANY games with only 1 GB of RAM. Depending on how long it will be before he has mony to upgrade again, I'd have to agree about getting a single 1GB stick of RAM. But if the guy's not going to upgrade for a year, go with 2x512MB.

One other thing though, why is everyone reccomending DDR800, when he can get DDR2 667 for way less? DDR2 800 is not a prerequisite to run a C2d, or AM2 for that matter, system.

Look at his budget and think about what he can get. I know C2D is fast, but money is the main issue for him. 2x512 may not be enough for a hardcore gamer, but handling MS Office and BF2 will be enough, plus you still have 2 empty memory slots, possible upgrade to 3GB (2x512Mb + 2x1Gb) for the future.

kay still. why in the world would you get 2x512 when you can just get 1x1gb.

dual channel isnt going to make a big diffrence.

What do you guys think about this setup, will all of this work together. I know these arent the top of the line parts right now, but I'm really just trying to build a budget gaming pc. I want to start off with 512mb of memory for now and just buy another stick later. Also what hard drive do I get that will work. Can I use a sata II or does it have to be a sata 1.5 gb/s. If you have any suggestions please let me know, but I really want to stay in this price range.

more ram and dont get a thermaltake psu

if you want to game, you have to at least have 1 gig (especially for bf2/bf2142)

and thermaltake psu's just have a bad rep... dont get it just cause its cheaper, the psu is the most important part to NOT go cheap on... check out static_11's sticky

Ok, cool. What brand psu is good? And for the ram, I'll stick with this for now and get another stick later.
