try plugging your monitor into your onboard video, and see what happens. when your screen turns off what color light does the monitor display?

I have no onboard video. WHen teh system does kill the monitor acts as if there is no input at all.

does the light on the monitor turn from green to yellow or orange?

any chance u can try switching the video card, i know you said your friends said it wasnt the problem but it wouldnt hurt to try to do it, at least rule it out. Also if u cant get it to install, move the hard drive to another tower that has windows installed, install windows onto your drive from that tower and put the hard drive back in your new tower if you can do this.
