When I try and pull some of my MPEGS and MP3's off of back up disks. I get Cycle Redundancy Check error on some files.

Some files copy to computer fine and some give the error.

What gives:mad:

some how the data on your back up disks have been corrupted.

CRCs are parity like bits only they are much stronger which checks the integrity of the unit of data.

CRC-16 is used in TCP/IP

Also if you use cheap no-name CD/DVD media and it's more than a few years old, then the dye may have started breaking down.

so data on cheap no name cds goes away in a few years.

does that mean one should switch to brand names.

I have tried to run the media straight off the CD and I get the same thing. The CD's are back up media about 2/2 1/2 years old. What are some good name brand CD's?

Thanks for all of the help!

I'm not sure which brand names are the best. I usually just play it safe and get Verbatim or other brand name ever since I found out about the possible info loss. The study that was done though was on no-name media more than five years old. I don't remember any info on data loss before that.
