What does "supporting 256MB(128MB on board)" mean in terms of graphic cards?

I'm guessing it's talking about a motherboard with internal memory, and you can set it to 256MB, if you use the system memory.

right, like tall dude said it seems that what ever device it is it has 128mb memory already installed (onboard) and it can be ugraded with another 128mb of memory

In graphics cards, you're talking about turbo cache (or whatever ATI's version is called).

The card has 128, but can and will use up to another 128 of system memory to make 256.

It's a step up from onboard, but not a big one.
