I love it how RAM is more than an amazing CPU these days...lol

Also, dont get that PSU, dont go cheap on your psu.

Here's a good one Antec 550

Also, I would rather go with this case Cooler Master

Dude, Forton (FSP Group) is one of the best PSU makers on the planet. The name is synonomous with quality. Im not just talking by myself either, ask anyone that knows about PSUs. And its cheap because its 450W. Thats all thats needed for that build. No point in going for a more expensive PSU when you dont need the extra power.

The Conroe is cheap. It will last a HELLUVA longer time than any ***** A64 right now.

And what kind of a computer suits a STUDENT? A64 or Conroe? See what a pointless question that was?

The point of the question was simply if the parents want to buy him a laptop, then they are going to buy one. Period. If they want to let him build one, then cool. Go for what you know.

But since this is his very first time even thinking about a build, myself as a parent would say no. If it suits the student better to have a desktop, then look into buying one.

JUST NOT DELL! :p
