Question about video card minimum requirements.

I was looking at a Radeon 9250 card. I went online to see what games are compatible with it. I could not find any that said it was specifically compatible with the Radeon 9250. Most of them said like compatible with Radeon 8500 or newer or compatible with Radeon 9000 or newer. So how does this Radeon system work? Is it the higher the number the higher the quality of the card? And if my card has a higher number then the one that is listed as the minimum requirement does that mean my card will work? i.e. if it says requires Radeon 8500 then the Radeon 9250 will work but if it says Radeon 9500 then the Radeon 9250 will not work?

If the game requires a X*** or X1***, forget it, as those series came after the 9***.
