In order to get the best results from my new graphics card will it be necessary to perform a clean install of windows? What all must I do to have the card work as well as possible from the transition from my old one?

vid cards performance should affected by the status of your current os installation.

That said, a fragmented hd, coupled witha system with inordinate amounts of boot up system components could affect overall system performance.

Doing a complete uninstall of the prior vid card is the only thing that should be of actual direct effect.

edit: "performance should affected" should read "performance should not be affected" :)

No, you do not have to re-install windows for a new video.

Just delete any and all videocard drivers (some do it in safemode to be sure), restart, shutdown, install video card, and install new drivers. That's it. :)

You only need to re-install Windows, when changing out major components such as the motherboard.
