hey all I am building my first comp with my 10year old. I am trying to get him a hobby of sorts other than couch potatoing. my amd 64 3800 went perfectly into the motherboard. we accidently unscrewed the mounting screws for the heatsink fan and when we went to screw them back in one wouldn't go in all the way.
The heat sink fam that came with the processor went in.

i bought an arti cool fan i wanted to use though any suggestions?

also I forgot to wipe of the the processor will that make a big differance?

power supply comes monday so i believe I have done no damage yet?

thanks tom

are we talking about the screws for the clip on the motherboard or screws for the replacement heatsink?

every time you remove a heatsink the old thermal paste (grease stuff) should be removed using an alcohol or xylene based cleaner (e.g. methylated spirits, isopropyl). then thermal paste must be re-applied, i and most of the forum reccomend AS5 or Arctic Silver 5.

Hello,

...Something like this black heatsink mount around the CPU socket of the motherboard?:

Hello,

If the mount was there before, then the mount should slot back in place properly again...you probably just need to be less gentle.
