Does external drives HAVE to have a enclosure??

Only Harddrives need an External Enclosure, Optical drives are Enclosures themselves, they enclose whatever media you put in them.

In order for any drive to work externally via USB or Firewire (whether it be an optical drive or hard drive) then you need an external enclosure.

This Samsung optical drive is already in an external enclosure.
