Well ive decided that im going to build my next computer, and i found this site and decided i would ask for suggestions.

First off, im new to computer building. I know pretty much what part does what, and all of the necisary components to actually build a computer. But i don't know what brand names to buy and what kind of things to watch out for. I already posted a thread on OEM hard drives, where i asked what that really meant, and weather thats the direction to go.

I have around a 1200-1300 dollar budget to build with. Im amost positive that im going to use an AMD 4200+ dual ore, but i haven't looked into the new pentium duo, so im open to suggestions. Im looking to have a computer that runs fast, and is decent for games. I don't play high end games, im just looking for a card that runs better than my 128mb did on my last computer. I do some video editing, and that takes up a lot of hard drive space, so i wasnt 320gb at least there. Im probably looking into 1-2gb of RAM. I don't need a killer sound card, but if i can fit it in it would be nice to have some suround sound capabilities. Overall the computer will be used for multi-tasking, video editing, and up-gradeability. Im looking for something thats gonna last me a while, aorund 2-3 years minimum.

Thanks for helping out if you post. If theres any spelling mistakes, it's because im on a laptop, and i don't do well on this keyboard. Also im on the road, so i wont be able to check this thread and post again until tomorow evening.

Go for the Intel Duo CPU it is better than the AMD dual core and you have the money!

Get about 2 Gb RAM. (ask around im not sure what brand)

Have fun and spend your money wisely!

Good Luck!

the parts nukem chose are good.. but the prices are not.. no offence to him or anything.. but the parts he picked are overpriced.. especially cpu and hard drive.. anyways.. for even cheaper, i can build something even better!! i sort of made the assumption that you're a hard-core gamer so i included a killer video card!

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Socket T $145

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe $299

$25 off for mobo/cpu combo...

Memory: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 $240

Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100149L Radeon X1900XT 512MB $340

Hard drive: Western Digital 320gb $93

Powersupply: Antec truepower 2.0 550 Watt $80

Optical drive: NEC dvd burner $29

Case: Cooler master case $45

total: $1245.93 +shipping - $40 mail in rebates

if you live in cali, NJ, tennessee.. then don't order from newegg... you should use pricegrabber.com anyways to check out better prices.

oops the HD i listed there is the IDE version... make sure to get teh SATA one...

and nukem, i'm glad you didn't take offence to that :D

thanks for the posts guys. unfortunately the 1200-1300 dollars is gonna have to include a monitor. I could get a cheap crt for as little as 25 bucks at a place nearby, but i would like to have a flat screen. I know LCD's are coming down in price, so it shouldn't take away too much.

Gil, add in 2 in there, the Core Duo is not better than the AMD 64 duals, but the core 2 duo is.

i don't play a lot of video games. I play a few older titles like halopc and command and conquer generals. I may get halo2 vista when it comes out, but that means i would aso have to buy vista. Overall games are not at the top of the list, i think a medium range video card should do fine, 256 mb maybe. I would raher spend money on a better hard drive. My last computer had only 80 gb, and i actually came down to only megabytes left one day, before i went on a deleting spree. I record video from my xbox, and that takes up a lot of space. Plus i would be able to store some of my favorite tv shows at the same time, instead of watching one series at a time then deleting it. In short hard drive sace and muti-tasking ability are more inportant than video ability.
