Hey everyone,

Im building my sister a computer for university and she really does not do a whole lot. Mostly web browsing, listening to music, and lots of typing. So the computer will be used for the basics plus burning dvds. I have to keep it cheap while still making an effective rig. now with that in mind i selected:

Socket AM2 athlon 64 3000+ with stock cooling $130
ASUS M2V mobo socket am2 $120
generic 1 gig stick of ddr2 @ 667mhz $110
a basic case +450watt ps $ 40
250 gb WD sata harddrive $ 100
keyboard and optical mouse $ 30
nvidia 6200 TC 128 meg $ 60
xp home edition $115
LG 16x dvdrom drive $ 30
LG 16x dvd burner $ 45

total is $ 795 CAD before tax

I selected all these parts at www.orleanscomputers.com because i live 2000 miles from tigerdirect.ca and it will cost me too much in shipping. Again this is not ever going to see a game maybe just some movie watching, any suggestions or is this a good rig? Did I forget anything becuase i have not build a computer in a while.

That CPU is way over priced, you should be able to get a 4000+ for $160, and the 3200+ should be more like $94.

Find a different store...

Get a smaller hard drive. Get a motherboard with onboard video (6100) to save money for a better case/PSU.

your sister is probably gonna want a computer that'll last a while, and the parts you chose are gonna be obsolete pretty soon..
that orleans store is in ottawa, so i assume you live in ontario, if you order out of province, you'll save the PST.. and with that saved, you could probably get a better system... here i'll show you. $40 for a case and PSU means that the psu is gonna be really cheap, which is very bad for your components.. you really need a GOOD powersupply... don't cheap out on this!!

parts i chose are from www.ncix.com become a member to get their good prices (its free).

here's what i would do..

GOOD powersupply with good case $110

dual core cpu! 3800+ X2 $180 (free shipping on entire order!)

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18462&promoid=1047

am2 biostar mobo w/ integrated video $90

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18967&promoid=1047

OCZ 2gb ram kit $240 - $40mail in rebate

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18495&promoid=1047

big enough seagate hard drive $114

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18409&promoid=1047

total: $733.92 + 6% GST = $777.95 - $40 mail in rebate

you don't need video card cuz its integrated, and you can always add one later if your sister decides to play video games later on..

keyboard/mouse/opticals i didn't include.. you can add that yourself.. ah, and i also didn't include winxp, its $20 cheaper at ncix... if you include all that, i think you're gonna be paying the same amount, since you'll be paying PST... but the system i chose is better...

nice build but i would go for a cheaper psu and ram and a cheap video card like a 7300gs it can play basic games and its under 100 us i dont know what it is in cad

yes 7300gt is a very good budget video card, low power consumption, 7 series core technology. and i am also agree with you for the the case and the psu, but only if his sister doesn't mind on some generic cases besides with a good separate psu would still be cheaper than that. also you can get a cheaper ram too and maybe a mATX case?
