New Pc Build

Hey guys.

I was around here like 3 years ago, but then slowly stopped coming here. I recognize some names and all, but anyways, its time for me to build a new Pc.

I want to build a gaming computer obviously, but I am stuck between a couple of different options.

I have a budget of around 600 USD.

I already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse/soundcard/speakers/DVD Burner

But I am confused as to what type of computer I should aim at - New Dual Core CPU, or a good 300 dollar graphics card.

Could you guys throw some rigs at me with everything except the stuff I already have?

If the CPU sucks (anything below an AMD 64) then the best GPU will not help you it will still blow. As much as people say the GPU is never CPU bottlenecked I still say that if you get a P-4 or below you will be SoL on getting good FPS.

Personally I got a 3800+ X2, and I will NEVER go back to single core, dual is to good =)

games these days are becoming more and more video card resource intensive. they're using the gpu to do more calcs than the cpu in comparison to a couple yrs ago. gpus are what's limiting games, but as josh said also, cpus are what limits gpus. so if i were u, i'd get a good cpu first and not so good video card, then save up some money later on to upgrade to a better v card. hmm, tight budget man. good luk

I may be able to squeeze in anouther 100, but thats like just 700 USD.

Could someone throw an example rig at me, I am working on one myself, but I want other ideas.

I have a p4 3.2 and a 6800gs, 2gbs of ram....im sure not gettin as high fps at higher settings then i believe i should be....do u figure my cpu is bottlenecking?....is there a test out there to find "the weak link"??

AmdX2 3800 AM2
His IceQ3 X1800gto (unlocks to a xl with 16pipes and then you could overclock it to beat a 7900gt)

Here is the one i am looking at right now. It comes out to 680USD.

I was really hoping that it would be under 600. I tried to skimp wherever I could. Can someone take a look and tell me if I can replace something of similar performance with something in here?

Is the hdd compatible with the mobo?

I know that PSU are very important, but should it be costing me this much? If possible, can someone reccomend a case with a strong PSU in it, so I can remove the PSU and the case I have selected and hopefully cut down some costs? Same with the Memory.

is there anything else you can get from your old rig? like hard drive and case? its difficult to get a good gaming build with your budget... i was also faced with the same predicament.. cheap out on cpu or gpu... i'll let you decide.. because you really shouldn't be getting anything less than a dual core these days.. and this is a gaming rig, so you don't want anything less than a 7900gt.. anyways... if you can salvage more parts from your old rig, you might be able to get this.. (btw, i didn't choose a case, i'll let you do that)

yes, over your budget... but i wouldn't get anything less..

the all-in-one card you chose isn't bad actually, but for $70 ($40 after rebate) its worth to get the 7900gt.
