Hi All,

Read somewhere, and this may seem to "out there", that the direction AMD is taking, will move AM2 to AM3 (cpu) and will be VERY comperable to a Socket 754 platform, AND with some bios upgrading, MAY allow AM3 cpu's to placed in Socket 754 motherboards????!!!???

Pie in the sky?
Too far-fetched?

Thank you.

Well it has alrady been said that S754 will outlive S939 by far ounce AM2 is out. MAYBE just MAYBE this is what they are talking about but i always thought it was becasue the Sempron line was on S754. Link to where you read this?

No, AM3 supposedly uses a PGA940 socket whereas socket 754 uses a PGA754 socket, therefore at the very least you'd had to bend or break off almost 200 pins in order for an AM3 chip to fit in a PGA754 socket...and obviously if a pin is there it is needed for something

Second you're looking at a HTT3 bus versus a primitive HTT1 bus that doesn't even operate at the full capability that HTT1 was capable of operating at (1600MHz vs. 2000MHz). Then you're looking at a different memory controller and memory bus, so they'd have to completely redevelop 754 boards to accept DDR3 which is not going to happen

You are most likely referring to the comparison between AM2/AM3 and 754/939 whereas both 754/AM2 are temporary PGAs for slightly new tech but will and have been confirmed to be replaced with better tech (AM3/939)
