I've looked all over the net and visited many, many tech forums without any luck.

My desktop icons won't boot when Windows XP starts. It just loads the
wallpaper in the background and that's it.

I have to manually boot the desktop icons by opening the command prompt and starting explorer.exe.

I don't have any Windows installation disc because I bought this PC from Rentway.

Here are my system specs:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 2002
Service Pack 2
2.2 Ghz 248 MB Ram

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

rename your local profile (while logged in with Administrator).
ex: c:\Documents and Settings\user.name <---------- rename to:
c:\Documents and Settings\user.name.OLD.BROKEN

Then once you have rebooted and logged back in normally to your "new local profile"

Copy over your "Desktop and Favorites" folder from the old "renamed" profile.

Open regedit (Start, Run, type regedit, OK) and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\system.ini\boot

There should be a string called "shell" with the following value:

SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

This string controls the default shell when Windows starts.

Then go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

There should be another string called "shell" with the following value:

Explorer.exe

donno if that will help but thats all i can think of.

When XP starts it does not give me the option to log in as admin or owner.

It always logs me on as owner.

Everything you mentioned is there.

You will need to create a new account. Or use the following to access the default Admin account.

From the run line:

control userpasswords2

Click on the advanced tab:
Put a check mark in the box that says "Require Users to press Ctrl Alt del"

Reboot and you should be prompted with a login page.

Administrator
No password

Or Administrator w/ Administrator

Administrator/administrator

(notice the case differences on the pw's)

Did it but no dice. When I restarted it took me to the Welcome screen like it always does then goes directly to the desktop.

It sill goes to desktop even when you did the following?:

Can you poke around in the users console for anything else that may say "Secured Logon"?
