I'm looking for a very basic software that will allow me to put passwords on certain folders. I have one but it only works for files.

I've seen plenty on the net, but all of them require you to pay 40-60 dollars. Either that or it's a trial version.

Any that are completely free and are easy to use?

If possible, I would like one that is integrated into the windows explorer that you can use when you right click.

Thanks!

Define what you mean by free? You mean legally free? ;-) There always ways around..err I said nothing..You could always use WINRAR and RAR them with a password. You can still use it after evaluation you just get that stupid pop-up that tells you to purchase it..but it still works..but there are ways to make that pop go away..err I said nothing..lol.

The only thing i know of that can do this is the Microsoft Private Folder Application. At least that creates a password protected folder for you to store stuff in. But it doesnt have the right click option.

So either you have to pay the $$ or find some other way to get it. ;)

Are you just trying to limit access to certain folders on your PC? There are other ways to go about doing this rather than relying on a 3rd party application.

Re:

Hello,

I use AxCrypt http://axcrypt.axantum.com/ . It's free, small and effective.

It integrates into Explorer...but it doesn't lock folders per se, but locks the entire contents of a folder if whenever you right click a specific folder and lock it using AxCrypt. So, you can access the folder, but all the files within it are locked, requiring you to unlock files individually when attempting to open them.

You can however, lock and unlock batches of files at once. AxCrypt takes the file, makes an encrypted copy of the original file (labelling it with an AxCrypt file extension), then shreds the original file. You can also remove the encryption from files so that you don't need to enter a password and decrypt it any longer.

Otherwise, if you don't mind paying for one, FolderLock is a very reliable program to use http://www.newsoftwares.net/folderlock/ .

XP has built in encrytion and password protection (alot of people don't know this)

Just select your file and right click it then go down to send to, then go down to compressed (ZIP) folder, and zip it then double click the file to open it while it is still compressed and click file and add password. This is all the olther freeware and payfor services do they just make it look fancy.

Yes but this way is the same thing as using WinRar, which is free, to zip up the files and password protect them. With the Private Folders App i mentioned you can leave the files uncompressed but still protected and accessable at any time as long as you know the password.

Or you could just use truecrypt...

with truecrypt you create virtual containers (which look like drives on your computer when they're mounted), and you can get some GOOD encryption with them, and it's a very simple process to access them whenever you need them. and it is completely free. if you need any help using it, i'd be more then willing to help you out with it.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm aware of the locking abilities with WinRAR and such but I don't use it because when I want to use the file, I have to extract it. And if it's a big file it will take forever.

I researched this microsoft private folders app thing and it looks like they took it off the net for a variety of reasons (one being that parents don't want their kiddies locking their porn up). Is there a place where I can still download it?
