I want to buy an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 for my computer so I dont have to upgrade for a long time. Is there anything I need to purchase in order to use this gfx card? Sorry I have never upgraded my computer before. Here is my computer info:

Sony VAIO Computer - PCV-RZ54G
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz
512 MB of RAM (I'm buying 512 MB more soon)

I appreciate any help.

is it AGP or PCI well you atleast need on of those then and know how to disable your onboard video port so it can use your new graphics card il ltry to look for a guide on that

EDIT: put your graphics card in your pc in one of the slots then right click on you desktop go to properties go to settign then under display it should tell you the onboard card is and remember it

ok now disabling you onboard video right click on my computer which is on your desktop or in the start menu then go to properties click on hardware then click on device manager now in device manager look for display adapters double click on it and it shwo you the video card it detects look for the one you want ot disable and right click on it and click on disable now unhook it and then hook it to your graphics card and see if it works. thats what i did.

I'm not sure what AGP or PCI is? Are those motherboards? If so do you know where I can find out what my computer has?

there these slots you hook graphics cards or wirless adapter or anything else

the AGP on is farther away from the bak of the case and usually brown and pci slots are white as shown in the pic

oh ok its the white one then and look at my first post on disabling the onboard video so yo ucan use your graphics card

I downloaded a program called CPU-Z and under "Graphic Interface" it says "AGP Version 3.0" So does that mean I have AGP or is that something completely unrelated?

I checked Sony's site... you have an AGP 8X slot, so a 7950 GX2 is out of the question.

Looks like the best/fastest you can get is either a 7800 GS
(eVGA 256-A8-N506-AX Geforce 7800GS CO 256MB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130274)
or a X850PRO
(HIS Hightech HX85PRF256-3VIAN Radeon X850PRO 256MB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814161172).

You'll need to upgrade your power supply as well. Here's a nice one:
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply
