which socket is best?

Sounds like a fun filled day! :D

I know there was a guy on here at some point who had a dual socket 940 system, and 2 7900GTs in SLI, and he scored pretty high 3DMark scores, but it must have cost him well over $2000. I agree, get the best single-socket, dual-core system you can afford for $1000, and stop arguing with us experts! Hehe! j/k :D

shhhhhhhhh ;) you are polluting his mind

using a 4 core system in this case is just overkill. he would be better investing in other components. while it does provide a reasonable performance boost in SMP enabled games (few and far between) it doesn't justify using 2x dual cores for gaming. it's one of those things that certainly is possible but probably shouldn't be done.

edit: i am going to go get some sleep because i am getting agressive for no reason. good night all

personally i'd look into that new conroe.

if your looking towards gaming, your money would be better invested in a nice video card or a pair of nice video cards and some good ram.

Dual socket is better, you can have two dual core processors and have 4 cores!

I would love to get my hands on a dual socket 940 mobo, and maybe a couple Opteron 275s, anybody feeling me? :D

Id get one of the Quad Opteron 940 boards;)

8 cores and then 16 GB of ram, thing should crunch numbers like a pro :D
