in my experience this is normally caused by 1 of 3 things:
1. loose or damaged IDE cable
2. CMOS battery is dying
3. progressive hdd failure i.e it is slowly dying
i have also seen it caused by dodgy power supplies or even from other dying drives. for example a failed/failing cd drive on the same cable can cause problems with a hdd

Sorry, didn't mean to cause any fuss...just a little harmless fun & games...besides, if english is his second language he's doing very well. :surprised
