Hi all,

I have a gainward gf4 ti4200 and basically the fan is going shitty and making lots of noise, I don't run any games on this system so would it be okay to shut the fan off? What are the risks?

Also I have a 40x40m AGP fan sitting on my motherboard would there be much risk in turning that one off if I dont run any games?

Thanks.

I would just get a new fan. Arctic Cooling makes nice GPU coolers, as well as Zalman.. Just look around for VPU or GPU coolers.

Just cutting the fan off will allow the GPU to overheat quickly, which can defintly damage the card if it doesnt shut off.

just a note,

i just pulled the graphics card fan off to have a look at it and have no thermal paste on hand to chuck it back on with, should be okay after putting fan back on shouldnt it?

No, it shouldn't. Metal on metal is a bad combination for heat dissapation. Run out and get some thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5), plop some on, then attach it back on.
