Overwriting Windows registry

Hi,

I recently completetly exported out the windows registry and made some changes to it, when I tried to import it back in to replace the original one, it said that it couldn't write some keys because it was currently being used by windows.
Now, how would I go about to completely replace the registry file with my edited one?

Yeah, I have windows XP Home

That link had some interesting info, but didn't address what I was looking for. I have a file I want to replace in the registry, but appraently it changes some things the system is currently using so it won't accept the changes.
