well i ended up just buying http://www.musicdirect.com/products/detail.asp?sku=AAQCLEANSCREEN . i tried the mixture with distilled water as well, and still had smears. this stuff was expensive ($20), but i only have 2 LCDs and i have a feeling it'll last me quite a few years. it's almost like a very thin gel, which allows you to spray it directly on the screen because it wont drip. leaves the monitor flawless so i'm happy, looks new again. comes with a very nice large microfiber cloth.
