windows xp user having probs with start up, error message is appearing, that reads cannot find file and cannot read or load file, i'm assuming these are encrytpted, as they are a sequence of squares...right???? what caused it may be advice i was given about a previous prob with cpu usage where i disabled system ini, startup services and win ini on msconfig and rebooted.

although i'm not expieriencing any setbacks (as yet) i do find it as little concerning!

i would be grateful for any help tips advice on this, i'm by no means an expert on these matters so please please please could someone hold my hand through this!!!!!!

unfortunately not, i can tell you that the prob lies in msconfig, two of the items in startup are where the problem lies, both items when unchecked solve the error pop -up, however leaving them unchecked makes any web page take longer than a really long thing to load up!!!!

both items have the same name ( 5 squares, literally) and there location is HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows:Run..................and Load

does that help you help me mcguire!!

Please scan machine with AVG (anti virus).

Thought :

Have you tried unchecking those (5) squares individually then restarting to see if the pop up goes away (without losing your browsing performance)?

scanned and no threats. when they're unchecked pop up does go but browsing is painfully slow

Is that when "all" of the boxes are unchecked? Or just 1?

Have you tried unchecking them one at a time?

sorry yes only when both are unchecked does it affect browsing, there are four error messages each startup item is responsible for two, one is cannot find file, the other is cannot run/load file

Oh yeah... I almost forgot.

Can you either post a screen shot of your msconfig / Startup tab?

Or

Install and run HighJackThis and post the log file here?
