so there isnt any harmful chemicals or stuff i need to look out for. Last time i opened on there was a really sick odor so i was wondering whether its just the old air

Yes, it may just be an old hard drive.

I took apart an 800MB Toshiba HD a few months ago, seemed fine.

Not as far as I know, just don't get the magnets too close to any working electronics

I find it very entertaining to take apart those huge old ones and play with the platters

i had a 4gb notebook hdd and it just died, so i put it in an external enclosure and i took the cover off the hdd and i saw the hdd spinning. it was pretty. i think it had some bad sectors or something cuz the heads would keep scanning the platters. oh yeah hdd's are completely harmless as long as u dont try to eat it or something stupid like that.
