can someone tell me what the purpose of a IEEE-1394 Fire Wire Card is?

You can network through firewire, and also connect other devices that have a firewire connection. Digital video cameras, external hard drives, external DVD-RW and CD-RW, etc.
The technology was developed by apple and was primarily made for a fast way to transfer video to a computer from a digital video device.
