I need to use the chkdsk from the recovery console when booting from an XP CD. I have never done this before, so what are the steps that I need to do in order to perform this task?

but its a little overwhelming basically once in cmd promt from the recovery console.
type something like this :
chkdsk c: /p /r

/p Performs an exhaustive check even if the drive is not marked for chkdsk to run. This parameter does not make any changes to the drive.
/r Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. Implies /p.
