The General... so are you 100% correct in that the HD will not make a real difference over the network?

Unless your computers are connected on some kind of fiber channel network @ 10 gigabits per second, you won't see any difference.

would cat 5 vs. cat 6 make a difference?

I'm assuming fiber for home office is stupid idea?

file server = a desktop used as a file server OR get a real file server?

technically, almost same thing. Right?

anyone have valid pros/cons? I guess I should buy the one with the best deal?

(note: I don't have a rack or anthing... it will go by itself in an enclosure I have "note: I will add a little, portable fan in it"

I've had a desktop in it for over a year... no problems (yet) :)

thanks

this is what i came up with, i think it should work but im not the best when it comes to networking and servers.

Bascialy you wont see much difference in speed w/ higher RPM drives. THe onyl real difference you will see is faster file transfers between 2 HDs and fsater XP load. I would recomend staying w/ SATA becasue PATA is getting outdated and SCSI is like WHOA exspensive. Fiber for home networking is overkill but would be neat to have :D

As for AMD dual core, yes they are great now, but soon the Core 2 Duo will come out and bascialy be the "bomb" for a while. No AMD will be able to touch it, and i thikn it wouldnt be bad for a server either lol. For standard networking there is no difference really between Cat5 and Cat6. They both support gigabit assuming you have gigabit networking and swticher. For what you want to do a standard desktop will work, but if you have the money go for it!

if youre not going to be using the first one for gaming then mabe think about the xps 200.

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_200?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

two drawbacks
1) best soundcard offered is Integrated Sound Blaster®Audigy™ HD Software Edition
2) best video card offered is the 128MB PCI Express™ x16 ATI Radeon™ X600 SE

so it really depends on how intense the "work" and "multimedia" things you will be doing are, because those cant handle much beyond the basics, but i saw the thing at a dell store and its pretty sweet if sppace is any issue. its only a foot tall and its less than 4 inches thick. Barely even there. So just in case that interests you... i dont know if space even matters...

sorry to get off topic but i think the K8L aritechure might be just as good or better, and it supports DDR3.

We know nothing about K8L and besides conroe is now, K8L is way beyond us now.
