i think the "Filtering and AntiAliasing Tool" in 3dm06 is very good. As it is able to be controlled in realtime, you can see exactly what they do. I noticed that above 7x AF, I cant tell the difference between 7x and 16x.
Also, what exactly does mipmapping do, as with it off, the textures are sharp, all the way into the distance. Is having it on a performace increase or deacrease? As far as I can see, all it does is make the textures blurry.
