Monitor Locks Up

my monitor recently broke down and i have no choice but to use a small 15" (13" viewable area) monitor on my pc. the problem is that everytime i open a game or program that starts in fullscreen with a higher resolution than 1024 X 768, the monitor turns black and the control panel lights start flickering. i know it's because the program's resolution is too high, but is there a way to prevent programs from switching that high? maybe a software download or a windows xp tweak? any help will be appreciated

Press F8 before windows loads and select VGA mode - change the resolution and boot normally.

normally games have ways of configuring resolutions etc outside the game. that is what you will have to try unless you want to re-install and re-configure them
