DVD Burning help

My friend is running an HP A1440N Media center PC, and he has been trying to burn some movies to dvd, specifically episodes of a show. He has been tried alot of things (turning down the quality), He mainly has problems with the encoding (Nero 7), He was wondering if there is any other software for encoding movie files to DVD format.

I don't know, but if it helps, they are .mpg's I think.
