A repair install doesnt delete any files other than the Windows files. It will leave all of your fiels in tact. It will just delete teh Windows fiels and reinstall then to the state they were in when you had it originally installed. Plus with your files. You will need to do all the updates again.
My best advice is that you should invest ina External HDD. Copy your files over to it. From there format the drive and partition it. Then install XP on 1 partition then leave the other for files. That way you wont have to worry about formatting since you will only have to format the XP partition not the files partition.
