Hi,

I have searched Google, but I cannot describe what is happening.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 w/ PIII 1000 Ghz, and a WD 60 gig HD.

I have only started to notice this recently. There is this static sound that is coming out of the laptop speakers and the headphone jack. (It happens on Win XP and Ubuntu Linux. Running Dual-boot.)

It is a weird static sound that I can hear when I scroll down pages within a website, or open up programs on the computer, and even move the mouse across the screen, I can affect the static noise.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I think that I remember seeing a link on (digg.com) so you can hear your hard drive activity through your computer speakers. Well, I have searched that website and I can't seem to find the link, or a way to fix this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Download and run a DFT (driver fitness test) program and run that on your computer. It will tell you if your drive is failing (which could be the cause of the noise you are hearing).

yea, i dont have a floppy drive..

but i went to PCpitstop.com and did a test on my8 hard drive, and they reported that everything was alright.

are there any other solutions?

Do you have a USB memory key, or an extra CD-R hanging around?

CD-R's come as $2 each, or about $20 for a spindle.
Memory keys are about $20 for 256MB.
