AVG Virus program help

Update using internet option doesnt work, so only way I can find new virus patterns is via "Version Tracker" subscription. Cant even find new virus patterns at AVG's website for the FREE version.
So now that I have the newest pattern file, I put it in the Update folder...but program never displays latest virus pattern when I run it.
This program received 5/5 ratings from users. No help is offered online for free version, other than .exe
updates, and FAQ section.

why doesn't update over the internet work? what happens when you try?

Select "Update Now" button brings up error message--
"unable to establish internet connection. Try manually...
perhaps by opening browser"? (my own words) Have DSL,
and opening browser does nothing. Cant find any internet
settings to provide, only one check/uncheck box that says
"User verifys dial-up connection" (or the like)

You can get the updates by going to the AVG site and downloading them manually..then use the update from Folder option.

I got an "update" file from AVG's site , put it in the "update" folder of program folders. That worked fine! I saw the auto-update process take place. What I'm having problem with is
virus patterns. I cant find them at the AVG site for FREE version 6.0. I get them elsewhere , but then cant verify that AVG6.0 FREE version program is finding the new pattern . It keeps displaying "virus database 406"
