main options...

1)geforce 7600gt

OR

2) SLI :
possibly 2 7600 Gs' or 2 6800 xt
(50 more dollars than 7600gt)

or

possibly 2 6600s (20 dollars cheaper than 7600gt)

what advantages would 2 lower tech cards have over one higher tech card

what advantages would the 7600gt have over two lower cards

basically, what type of comuter use would each setup suit the best?

7600gt

because unless you have a motherboard that runs 2 x16 pci express slots your SLIed video cards would only run a quarter better then 1 of those cards

so either get a better mobo
or get the highest end card you can :) SLI later

Get the 7600GT or 7900GT(if you can afford $289 it's definatlly worth it).

SLI isn't worth the money off the bat, it's only worth it if you already have one of the cards then get another when you need it and it will be cheaper. Example: Get a card now, then once the price drops (and if you actually need another) buy another.

yeah if you can afford the 7900gt get that and it should be a little bit cheaper than 2 7600gt's that one card will out perform the other two and you can add one later on when you need a little extra juice

SLI is ONLY worth it when you are running games or 3d intensive apps on huge resolutions with lots of AA and AF. A 7900GT can pretty much take anything maxed out on 1280x1024, anything the 7900GT can't do, the 7900GTX definitely can.

wow he is asking advice on cards in the 6600 and 7600 range and your telling him to get a 7900 GTX? wow....we all dont have 600 dollars to spend

A lot of you are saying that you should get one card and add another one later. The thing is though, with SLi the cards have to be EXACTLY the same. You would have to buy 2 cards at once if you want SLi, not at different times cos they are likely to be different in some way.
