on a side note, if i bought a graphics card and i planned to overclock would i be better off getting say the 7900 gt which is not overclocked as opposed to the 7900 gtx which is?

GTX isn't overclocked, it's got 512 RAM, but there is an overclocked version XFX 7900GTX XXX

Definitely go for a dual core. It's not worth spending that kind of cash on a single core when dual cores will be used much more effectively in the future.

Opteron is the same as Athlon 64, but overclocks better and is more stable. No one uses Socket 939 Opterons as server processors, thats what Socket 940 is for.

No one on here is an AMD salesperson. Some are more biased towards one or the other, sometimes more than even a AMD salesperson would be biased, but there is no one on this forum that gets [financial] profit from recommending a AMD processor.

haha i was just kidding about the salesperson remark.
my mind has been changed i will nodoubtably opt for a dual core, save some money and upgrade my video card. now my only descision is opteron or athlon.

Opteron 170.

Don't go for the highest you can buy, even if you can afford it. You can always overclock a slower processor (especially Opteron) to faster than the highest processor's speed. Opteron 170 will get you to 2.8GHz, almost guaranteed. Thats DUAL FX-57s for $400

Put the rest of the money into a really good videocard like a X1900XT or a 7900GTX. Or just save it for next year's computer upgrade.

this is the set up i ended up with, i read tons of reviews on opteron and athlon x2 and was torn. i'm not an overclocker by any means but i'm sure i can push a few extra ponies out of this set up and be quite happy. plus i'm sure i can upgrade 1 or two more times before the end of 939 socket. perhalps fx62?
