I want to buy a CPU to put in a computer for mid range gaming for a friend.

I have been offered a socket 478 Celeron D 2.8ghz with HSF for $35

and I have also been offered an AMD athlon Xp 2600 2.2ghz socket A with HSF for $40

I already have a socket A motherboard and a socket 478 motherbaord.

Which one would be a better choice?

yeah that would be the choice, except he has socket a and socket 478.

socket 478 has a bigger range of cpu choices, and you can get an intel Core duo, but the cheapest one i think is $400. so you might want to consider a celeron or something.

i keep hearing people say that but i have yet to actually see it. i am aware there are socket 479 to socket 478 adapters but they were designed for the original socket 479 pinout (banias/dothan core). yonah is still s479 but with a different pinout and as i have yet to see a modified adapter or a released desktop motherboard how is it possible?

edit:personally i would take the athlon xp given that 2600+ should roughly equal a 2.8ghz celeron *estimating*. also taking into account the athlon's superiority in games and the fact that it tends to perform higher than its "equivelantly" rated p4 counterpart.
