and the java update and the soundman and ctfmon {ms office}

go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

in your registry. this will show you the hidden program that run at startup, but don't show up in startup. right click and delete the ones that you don't want

for all user on the computer, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

to delete keys

No improvement

I removed everything except my anti-virus and firewall but there is no difference. I don't understand. I have fewer services and programs loading at startup now, yet my computer starts slower than when I had everything running including Norton, plus a fragmented drive and many obsolete registry entries.

Could it be a problem with my prefetching? I don't know what it does but I read that to speed up startup, you could delete everything in your prefetch folder. So I did and that's when I think the problems started. Then I read that it's a common misunderstanding to delete your prefetch items. Instead of speeding up your startup, it will do the opposite and slow it down. Anyone aware of anything?

Just as an aside, if I am not using any Norton or SYmantec products, can I/should I remove all Norton and Symantec keys/folders manually from my registry?
